A Free Community Workshop by Dr Cindy Soh
What Does Science Have to Do with the Food on Your Table?
Every meal you prepare, every ingredient you choose, and every cooking method you use is shaped by science — whether you realise it or not.
From understanding why food spoils, to knowing which nutrients your body truly needs, food science sits at the heart of healthier cooking and better everyday choices.
Food Science on Your Table is a free, accessible community workshop designed to bring these ideas to life in a practical, engaging way — no scientific background required. Led by Dr Cindy Soh and jointly organised by North East SkillsFuture Advice (Lifelong Learning Singapore), North East Community Development Council (CDC), and the Asian Culinary Institute, this workshop is open to all who are curious about what goes into the food they eat every day.
About the Workshop
In this session, participants will explore the scientific principles behind:
- Food preparation — understanding how heat, water, and technique affect texture, flavour, and nutrition
- Food safety — learning how to handle and store food correctly to prevent contamination and spoilage
- Healthy food choices — understanding the nutritional value of what we eat and how small changes can lead to meaningful improvements in health and wellbeing
Through simple, relatable, and practical examples, this workshop will help you connect everyday kitchen habits to the science behind them — so you can cook smarter, eat better, and make more informed choices for yourself and your family.
This is personal development in the most practical sense: learning that you can apply the very next time you step into the kitchen.
